November 26, 2011 - Carl Pursey, President of the Prince Edward Island Federation of
Labour (PEI) signed the People’s Postal Declaration on November 26th, 2011. Behind Brother Pursey
is George Floresco, CUPW’s 3rd National Vice President, Anita Bock, Vice-President of the Charlottetown local
and Scott Guadet, President of the Summerside local.
April 29, 2010 - Daniel Boucher, President and CEO of the Société franco-manitobaine was
the first to sign the "People's Postal Declaration" in April 2010. The declaration is circulating in
communities across the country. It is a joint initiative of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (Union of
Postal Communications Employees) and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. For more information, see the

June 30, 2010 –The Truro Local held a public barbeque. Bobbi Jo Brown, Secretary
Treasurer of the local said “ For 3 hours, we fed and informed the public of the state of their post office.
“ Ninety-four people signed the People’s Postal Postal Declaration as a result.
September 16, 2010 – The Edmonton local issued a media release pointing out that Canada
Post is quietly introducing a series of service cuts as it moves to modernize its operations with millions of
dollars in new investments. “CUPW Edmonton Local President Bev Ray said, “Weekend mail clearance and retail
services are under attack, as well as the recently publicized reduction in Street Letter Boxes...Eighty-six
of the red mail boxes were recently eliminated across Edmonton, although one was reinstated following
pressure from Strathearn Community League members.” Ray said “Seniors, people with disabilities and everyone
are being hit by this cut,” She also warned that more boxes are sprouting signs indicating that they are
slated for elimination by September 24th and asked “Where will it stop?”
October 22 & 23, 2010– Council of Canadians (COC) members at the COC Annual General
Meeting signed letters to members of Parliament (MPs) protesting the cuts to public postal service and
jobs.
November 12, 2010 – Local 401 of the Communications, Energy and Paper Workers Union of
Canada in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (PEI) wrote to Rob Merrifield, the minister responsible for
Canada Post, to raise concerns about cuts to postal service and remind the government that PEI residents take
the issue of postal service very seriously.
November 15, 2010 – The Hamilton and District Labour Council sent a letter to Minster
Merrifield which points out that Hamilton has been hit hard by jobs losses and does not want to see further
job cuts at Canada Post. The letter informs the Minister that the labour council passed a resolution calling
on the government to instruct Canada Post to improve services, preserve jobs and consult with Canadians on
the best way to meet postal goals.
November 19, 2010 – The CUPW Sunshine Coast Local from British Columbia took out an ad in
the Coast Reporter urging local residents to contact MP John Weston if they believe that Canada Post
should share the benefits of modernization with the public by preserving and improving public postal
service and jobs.
November 27 to 28, 2010–CUPW attended The Food Secure Canada Assembly 2010’s “Weaving
Together Food Policy and Community Action: An Agenda for Change” at the University of Montreal. The
union raised concerns regarding food security and public postal service. It also asked conference
participants to sign letters to MPs opposing cuts to public postal service and jobs.
December 1 to December 3, 2010 – Delegates to the Québec Federation of Labour convention
in Montréal signed letters to MPs protesting cuts to postal service and jobs.
December 1, 2010 – Delegates to the British Columbia Federation of Labour passed a
resolution instructing the federation to write to Minister Merrifield and request that he instruct Canada
Post to maintain and improve our network of public post offices and that he also consult with the public and
major stakeholders to improve the Canadian Postal Service Charter.
What you can do
Contact allies, community groups and municipal representatives. Ask them to pass two
resolutions.
