CLC Policy Statement on Canada Post's Strategic Review

Strategic Review of Canada Post / Miscellaneous

The Canadian Labour Congress is concerned because the federal government is considering deregulation of our public post office through its strategic review of Canada Post. The Canadian Labour Congress is worried that as a result of this review; the federal government will either reduce or eliminate Canada Post's exclusive privilege to handle addressed letters. Canada Post has an exclusive privilege so that it is able to generate enough money to provide affordable postal service to everyone, no matter where they live in our huge country, be it a large urban centre or a rural or isolated community.

The Canadian Labour Congress knows that a public postal service helps people to communicate and allows communities to thrive. It plays an important role for the good of society as a whole.

The Canadian Labour Congress knows from experience of other post offices and postal unions that deregulation usually leads to a deterioration of postal service and higher rates for the public and small business. The breaking of Canada Post's exclusive privilege would jeopardize universal service. It would also lead to decline in mail service, especially to rural areas.

The Canadian Labour Congress condemns any attempt by the federal government to deregulate all or part of Canada Post.

The Canadian Labour Congress will make a submission to the Canada Post Corporation Strategic Review opposing deregulation of Canada Post and encourage affiliates to make submissions.
