Dear Editor:

Re:      High quality of service makes Canada Post the most trusted Canadian institution

A recent poll reported in the Globe and Mail (“In the postal service we trust” published on May 21, 2007) found that 90% of those surveyed trust Canada Post, overtaking other institutions like the CBC and the Supreme Court.

This poll raises a good question: what do people mean when they say they trust Canada Post?

  • They trust that they are getting good value for their money. Canada Post is now in its 12th consecutive year of turning a profit while we all continue to benefit from the second lowest postage fees in the G8.

  • They trust the quality and reliability of service provided by the dedicated women and men who work at Canada Post.

  • They trust that their mail will be delivered efficiently and quickly in one of the largest countries in the world. Postal workers sorted and delivered 11.6 billion pieces of mail in 2006 with a successful delivery rate of 96%.

The Globe and Mail may have updated their look but it seems that they will also have to update their opinions about the post office. Campbell Clark seems surprised that people would give such high marks to Canada Post because of labour disagreements and poor service in the 70s.

There hasn’t been a postal strike in close to a decade. In fact, a new collective agreement covering 48,000 workers was just finalized last month without a strike and service has definitely improved.  So public trust in Canada Post shouldn’t be such a big surprise.

Sincerely,

Deborah Bourque
National President
