Dear Mr. Cannon:

Re: Moratorium on Post Office Closures

Your chief of staff, Paul Terrien, recently wrote to say that his letter dated July 25th was a response to all of my letters to you, including my letter dated July 18th. I am afraid that Mr. Terrien is mistaken. The July 25th letter in no way addresses my request for a list of the post offices that are covered by the moratorium on post office closures. The previous government provided a list when they established the moratorium in 1994. Is there a new list that includes the locations that have become 'one post office towns' since the moratorium was announced? Does the old list still apply? If there is a new list, would it be possible to get a copy of this list?

As well, the July 25th letter does not address my question regarding the process that is used. As you know, post offices covered by the moratorium have been closed and will continue to close if Canada Post adheres to its practice of consulting with "local officials" about potential closures. I would therefore like to know if your government is willing to instruct Canada Post to consult with the public, postal unions and other major stakeholders when making a decision to keep or close post offices covered by the moratorium?

I look forward to hearing from you on this very important matter.

Yours truly,

Deborah Bourque
