Report of the Canada Post Corporation Strategic Review – Where is it?

Strategic Review of Canada Post / Bulletin

2008-2011/155

When the federal government launched the Canada Post Corporation Strategic Review (CPCSR) a year ago, it promised to make the report of the CPCSR public.

The government received the CPCSR report in late December. It’s been almost four months now and the report has not yet been released to the public.

A previous government only took about two months to release the last report on Canada Post.

Four months is a very long time, even by normal standards.

CUPW has been told that Canada Post has the report. We do not believe it is reasonable to withhold the report one moment longer, especially if the corporation has it.

Why the delay?

There are a number of possible reasons why the government has not released the report:

  1. Rob Merrifield, the minister responsible for Canada Post, may have other priorities.
  2. The government may want to wait until after Canada Post releases its annual report and use information from this report to show that certain measures are necessary. The annual report is normally released in late April or early May.
  3. The government may be wary about releasing a report on our public post office in the run up to an election (rumours are circulating about a fall election), especially if the report makes recommendations to cut service to the public or cancel the moratorium on post office closures in rural and small towns.
  4. The government may also be concerned about report recommendations to take measures which would destroy good jobs and undermine important infrastructure in the midst of an economic crisis.
  5. The government may be discussing the report and its response with Canada Post.

We want it

The government should be discussing the CPCSR report with the people who own the post office – the public – not the people who manage it on our behalf.

CUPW has written to Minister Merrifield to raise these concerns and call for the immediate public release of the CPCSR report

In solidarity,

Denis Lemelin
National President
