Dear Mr. Cannon:

Re: Deregulation and Privatization of Canada Post

During the election, CUPW attended all-candidates meetings in Pontiac and asked you about federal government plans for Canada Post.  In response to our questions, you stated: “you can read my lips, I’m not deregulating, I’m not privatizing.”

Would it be possible to get this commitment in writing?

Also, does your commitment to not deregulate include a commitment to not reintroduce Bill C-14 (the bill that would have partially deregulated Canada Post by removing international letters from Canada Post’s exclusive privilege to handle letters) or a similar bill?

As well, the union would like to know if you have given new instructions to the advisory panel of the Canada Post Corporation Strategic Review (CPCSR). Earlier this year, you asked this panel to look at postal deregulation. Is the panel still considering deregulation?

Finally, I would like to use this opportunity to reiterate my request for a meeting to discuss the Canada Post Corporation Strategic Review. As you know, CUPW has a number of questions and concerns about this review which we would like to discuss.

Yours truly,

Denis Lemelin
National President
