Strategic review YouTube videos – check them out!

Strategic Review of Canada Post / Bulletin

2008-2011/057

In response to the strategic review of Canada Post, CUPW asked members to make short YouTube videos answering the question: “What does your post office mean to you?” With the video makers’ permission, CUPW submitted these videos to the strategic review panel as a submission.

How can I watch them?

You can watch all the videos by going to http://ca.youtube.com/cupwsttp

This is CUPW’s channel on YouTube. We have added the videos made by postal workers to our favourites list on the cupwsttp channel. Make sure to watch the national union’s video as well. It’s called Postal Deregulation: Positively Rubbish.

What did the videos say?

The videos had many important messages directed to the review panel.

CUPW national’s video:   Listen, I’m as big a fan of positive thinking as the next person - see I have the book - but not when it comes to deregulation of our public post office.

CUPW Central Region’s video:  Postal deregulation in other countries has led to post office closures, less service, fewer jobs and higher postal rates for the public and small businesses.

Mark’s video:   My idea of a public post office is one that has an exclusive privilege on delivering lettermail and an exclusive privilege on delivering parcels to residential addresses.

Wayne’s video:   As we speak right now, Canada Post is under a review put out by the Harper government and the review is to discuss whether or not they can deregulate letter carrier delivery or should we say lettermail delivery.

Rachel’s video: (translation)   This is a green postal service. I mean, a letter carrier on foot, it’s very environmentally friendly. It scares me when I hear rumours that our postal service could be privatized, in a sense, because I know we could lose many benefits in relation to the environment.

What next?

We’d like to thank all members who made a video during the busy summer months. Now the union will be organizing and preparing for the strategic review panel’s final report. So, be sure to participate in the union’s days of action in October and ensure you vote for electoral candidates that stand strongly against the privatization and deregulation of postal services.

We will also keep the CUPW YouTube account up and running so if you make an interesting or informative video about postal issues, be sure to send the link to video@cupw-sttp.org so we can add your video to our favourites list.

In solidarity,

Denis Lemelin
National President
