The History of Our Postal Service

Strategic Review of Canada Post / Bulletin

2008-2011/046

Hey Harper – Hands off my post officeDid you know?

  • 1693: First paid mail delivery in Canada
  • 1775: Official postal service starts its operations
  • 1851: Government takes control of mail delivery
  • 1867: Creation of the Federal Post Office Department
  • 2009: What does the future hold for our postal service?

Our universal public postal service existed well before the start of Confederation and still works very well today.

So why change our postal service?

Deregulating our postal service will compromise an affordable service for everyone from coast to coast.

What kind of service will we end up with in remote areas?

In solidarity,
