Union holds alternative public consultations on Canada Post’s plan

Ottawa – The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is hosting a public forum on the future of public postal services in light of Canada Post’s recent announcement to invest 1.9 billion dollars in capital expenditures to “modernize” the post office.

“Management’s vision of Canada Post is of a profit-driven commercial enterprise. CUPW’s vision is of a service-oriented public post office,” said CUPW National President Deborah Bourque.

“This vision of the Post Office is a disaster for postal workers and the public,” said Louis Lang, President of the CUPW Ottawa Local. “But what is most disturbing is that this corporation, which they are preparing to slice up and sell to the highest bidder, was built on the basis of the efforts and sacrifice of both the Canadian public and postal workers. This cannot be allowed to pass.”

We are organizing a Public Forum on the future of Canada Post to give postal workers and all Community organizations an opportunity to speak out on the need for a public post office which provides universal, affordable and accessible service for all and which provides decent safe jobs for postal workers.

We invite everyone to join us for a discussion on this important issue. CUPW Ottawa Local will be hosting an alternative public forum on the future of our public postal service.

The forum is an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the ideas and needs of the people of Ottawa who use the postal service and to share ideas on what we think a modern post office should look like.

The event takes place on Thursday March 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus hall, 260 McArthur Ave. in Vanier. All are welcomed to attend.
