Media Advisory

Ottawa, January 29, 2008 – Postal workers and Bloc Québécois MP, Thierry St-Cyr, will deliver a gigantic post card to Lawrence Cannon, Minister responsible for Canada Post, in an attempt to save a Montreal post office. The post card demands the Conservative government reverse the decision to close a community post office and reopen another one elsewhere. It is signed by 1,186 residents of Pointe-Saint-Charles who will be affected by the closure.

Who:

Pierre St. Hilaire, CUPW Montreal National Director

Thierry St-Cyr, Member of Parliament, Bloc Québécois

Where:

Confederation Building, Ottawa (outside main entrance, Bank and Wellington)

When:

Tuesday January 29, 2008 at 1:00 pm

Canada Post will be investing $1.9 billion to modernize our public post office yet it is cutting key links in our postal system. The public post office in Pointe Saint-Charles is the only one in the neighbourhood and plays a key role in the social and economic life of the community. This action follows petitions and a demonstration against the closure that occurred in December 2007.

CUPW believes Canada Post needs to provide universal, affordable and accessible service in all communities. CUPW will continue to fight alongside Action-Guardien and MP Thierry St-Cyr against moving the post office from Station D to Bridge Depot.
